The Process Of Mold Machining

No matter how complex the mold is, the mold machining process is almost the same in the following points:  

1. Mold programing

After mold design finishing, the next step is mold machining. But at first, need to program to check which parts need CNC, and which parts need EDM, etc. 

2. Mold machining

Almost all molds will be machining with milling, grinding, EDM, wire-electrode cutting, etc. 

*Milling machine: the process of cutting and drilling steel with a rotating cylindrical tool called a milling cutter. It is held in a spindle and can vary in form and size.  The main difference between a milling machine and any other drilling machine is the ability to cut in different angles and move along different axes. For this reason, there are several kinds of milling machines, which are designated by the number of movement axes: 2-axis milling machine, 3-axis milling machine, 4-axis milling machine, 5-axis milling machine, CNC milling machine(which can have any number of axes and operated through a computer).

*Grinding machine: using grinding tool to ground finish the mold steel surface. Most grinding machines use a high-speed rotating abrasive wheel to the machine, only a little use of oilstone, an abrasive belt, and others to machine the mold steel.

*EDM(electric discharge machining): is a manufacturing process whereby a desired shape is obtained by using electrical discharges(sparks). Material is removed from the workpiece by a series of rapidly recurring current discharges between two electrodes, separated by a dielectric liquid and subject to an electric voltage. 

3. Mold spotting

The mold spot is the surest and safe way to check the butting of the core & cavity of a mold. It allows us to conveniently match all the parts of the mold in a more comfortable position, check and finish the mold in one place in a more ergonomic position.
